Nearly three million dead whales speak out!

We can be an amazingly destructive species and newly published data shows that, in the case of the whales, that industrialized whaling killed nearly three million of them in the twentieth century.

This is probably the biggest removal of animal biomass that we have ever achieved! Populations were left decimated and we probably lost populations that we never even knew existed.

Twentieth century whaling, compared with earlier whaling,  "benefited from significant technological advances that made it easier than ever before to efficiently render whales into commercial goods, principally the motorised whale catcher boat, the exploding harpoon gun and enhanced processing and storage capacity at sea".

These advances meant that no whale was safe in any ocean.

In the Huffington Post HERE I report on this new information and consider the lessons it presents for any future whaling.
