Come the Autumn: come the rut.

A herd of mainly female fallow deer at Dyrham Park.
Come the autumn; come the fallow deer rut - their mating season.
The antlers of the adult males have lost their velvet and those with the biggest sets of antlers compete to the point of complete exhaustion for control of the females.

The females graze quietly.

A pair of magpie's look on.

An adult male trots along looking for trouble.
He runs off past the autumnal horse chestnut tree.

An exhausted and defeated stag rests in the shade.
He can barely raise his heads or open his eyes.
This stag seems in better shape but he too is resting.
Stags in rut: a battle in progress.

The gate to Dyrham.
